When Media Thinks Back: AI, Agency, and the Concept of Media

This talk explores the historical evolution and philosophical reconceptualization of media, tracing its transformation from artistic and material intermediaries to intelligent, interactive systems. Drawing on thinkers such as Aristotle, Plato, Lessing, Benjamin, McLuhan, Flusser, and Kittler, it examines how media have shaped human cognition, communication, and culture across time. Special attention is given to the Canadian School’s contributions to orality-literacy theory and the notion of a 'mediatic a priori,' culminating in today’s 'mediatic turn.' In the era of AI, media no longer merely transmit information—they begin to think with us, and sometimes for us. This raises critical dilemmas about agency, creativity, and cognition. By examining remediation theory and technological determinism, the talk proposes that AI should be reframed not as a replacement for thought, but as a scaffold for learning. Reflections on how emerging media can be integrated into educational design without undermining human agency remain at the heart of the challenge ahead.
